Brave New World & “Bokanovsky’s Process”

The contention among independence and shared personality shapes a focal subject of Huxley's Brave New World. From the initial page of the novel, plainly Huxley's humorous perfect world is upheld by a superseding feeling of urban position and common personality. The World State praises its law and moral ideal models by method of sloganism and its messenger: â€Å"†in a shield, the World State's proverb, COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, STABILITY†; the three words in quick progression propose that the strict trinity of Father-Son-Holy-Ghost have been supplanted by common identification. The words appear to lead into each other, obscuring their implications together and recommending a circumstances and logical results: that â€Å"community† takes into account â€Å"identity† and â€Å"stability†; network in the World State, truth be told, is personality and strength, (Huxley). As the novel's previously expanded scene gets in progress, the peruser starts to enter the idealistic world and understands that singularity, as perceived by contemporary certifiable perusers, is put at an extremely low need in the World State. The large scale manufacturing of vehicles and other industrial facility assembled items has been applied to human beings.Students go to a clinical talk on the â€Å"Bokanovsky's Process† which creates mass-human creation: One egg, one incipient organism, one grown-up typicality. In any case, a bokanovskified egg will bud, will multiply, will isolate. From eight to ninety-six buds, and each bud will develop into an entirely framed undeveloped organism, and each incipient organism into a full-sized grown-up. Causing ninety-six people to develop where just one developed previously. Progress. (Huxley) From the earliest reference point of life in the World State, singularity is yielded for the sake of network and for the sake of progress.Huxley's humorous reversal of the affiliations most regularly connected with human newborn c hildren: those of plausibility and uniqueness and delight and subsumed underneath his Ford-industrial facility idealistic deliberation of infants conceived in labs on transport lines. With this single picture and scene, Huxley sets up the focal polarity of Brave New World, the contention between singular freedom and self-realization and mutual of State-controlled force and State ordered â€Å"happiness.† Because's Huxley will likely study the â€Å"inhumanity† of man, his vision of the total annihilation of independence, by need, must start during childbirth. The icily natural and mechanical production system symbolism sets up the profundity and broadness of the contention among distinction and network recognizable proof with earnestness and quickness. To additionally broaden the breadth of the contention, Huxley must exhibit the loss of individual sexual drive and regenerative rights directly alongside his vision of the State run mechanical production system incubator s.To totally subsume uniqueness, it is important to demystify sensuality and sexual acts: sex is allowed uninhibitedly in the World State despite the fact that the sort of sex which is delineated is cold and pitiless and not in the least what one would connect with human sexual motivation and sentimental connections as we presently know them. Since human sexuality starts with mental self view, Huxley's portrayal of Lenina's prepping and dressing routine assumes a key job in indicating how singularity is killed by the Stare supported sensuality and design: â€Å"Lenina escaped the shower, toweled herself dry, grabbed hold of a long adaptable cylinder connected to the wall[†¦] An impact of warmed air tidied her with the best bath powder. Eight unique aromas and eau-de-Cologne were laid on in little taps over the wash-bowl. † Because Lenina is later uncovered to hold genuine radical considerations in regards to sexuality and love, the first scene of her shower and dressing serves to show how her characteristic magnificence and common sexuality have been darkened underneath manufactured ism and shared homogeny, (Huxley).Lenina's ideal condition of sexuality is in obvious clash with the proclaimed sexual ethics of the World State where past thoughts regarding adoration, sex, and sentiment are attacked and seen as restrictions to genuine human articulation: â€Å"Family, monogamy, sentiment. Wherever selectiveness, a restricted directing of motivation and energy†; in the new, dynamic culture, â€Å"every one has a place with each one else,† and there is nothing of the sort as individual love or sentiment or monogamy. This reversal of sexual leniency †like Huxley's conflation of sequential construction systems and nurseries †is an unexpected procedure which is intended to flag the risks of the breakdown of uniqueness and unconstrained :chemistry† between individuals. Huxley is stating, as a result, that is human distinction is relinquished for the sake of progress, at that point genuine advancement will likewise have been yielded inside and out. By exhibiting the odd idea of State supported Eros and State supported births, Huxley assaults the center encounters of humankind and sets his humorous sights on explaining through ghastliness, the grave significance of individuation in society. In reaction to the adage that â€Å"everyone has a place with everyone† and therefore has no close to home will at all, the youthful understudies in the talk just acknowledge this maxim as truth: â€Å"The understudies gestured, unequivocally concurring with an explanation which as much as sixty-2,000 reiterations in obscurity had caused them to acknowledge, not only as obvious, however as proverbial, undeniable, totally indisputable,† and with his perception, Huxley clarifies that the smothering of distinction prompts a smothering of the psyche, the creative mind, and the will to find truth instead of advant ageous yet conceivably degenerate or bogus clarifications, (Huxley)If borth adn propagation assume a huge job in the central components of Huxley's ironical assessment of the contention between singularity adn network in Brave New World, the issue of death †and all the more explicitly of lamenting †assume a similarly significant job in introducing an Utopian bad dream where the fundamental characteristics and encounters of mankind have been cleared over by homogenized understanding and dispassionate relational connections. A genuine case of this sub-subject in the novel is the scene between the Savage and the medical caretaker in the emergency clinic when the Savage's mom lies dying.Normal lamenting is taken a gander at as a profound shortcoming in the social request of the World State: â€Å"Startled by the appearance of pain on his pale face, she abruptly severed. â€Å"Why, whatever is the issue? † she inquired. She was not familiar with this sort of thing in gu ests. (Not that there were numerous guests in any case: or any motivation behind why there ought to be numerous guests. ) â€Å"You're not feeling sick, right? † He shook his head. â€Å"She's my mother,† he said in a barely discernible voice. The medical attendant looked at him with surprised, appalled eyes; at that point immediately turned away. (Huxley).Huxley's epic is sarcastic fundamentally, yet it is astonishing in understanding and the quality of its instinctive message about the earnestness of safeguarding uniqueness is from numerous points of view made intensely ground-breaking by Huxley's mocking reversal of essential methods of human experience including: birth, love, sex, companionship, mental self view, and even passing. By showing the frightfulness of perfect world through the loss of individual distinction, Huxley competently parodies a considerable lot of the shows and advances which have consistently ascended as a danger in the public eye to the holin ess of the person.

What is a Movie Review?

What is a Movie Review?A movie review is an unbiased, unbiased judgment on a specific movie. It will focus on both the positives and negatives of a movie and make a point of including both good and bad in a review. It should also show one's curiosity and interest. A movie review should keep to those principles which distinguish them from the ordinary and informal gourmet movie review that you have to submit for publication in your local newspaper. The general format of a movie review is as follows: An author's name will be cited to give the viewer an idea of who is writing the review. A full, accurate and entertaining account of the film will then follow. Each of the following paragraphs should be exactly as it is described: - PREPARATION - PERFORMANCE - MOVIE PORTRAYAL - PROS & CONS - DEFINITIONS - FINAL THOUGHTS - RECOMMENDATIONS. These basic paragraphs are also called the 'pillow talk' as compared to the typical 'head and shoulders' style of movie reviews. They are usually foll owed by a brief discussion of the different portions of the movie and where one can purchase the DVD and/or Blu-Ray release. These brief descriptions can make the movie review far more meaningful and fun for the audience to read. Many viewers would like to know more of the movie they have just seen. If the review states one's intent as to whether one would see it again or recommend it to others, the review becomes far more helpful to the audience. In addition, one's intention to recommend a movie to others can help others with viewing habits and choices.Once you have prepared the movie review, it is essential to use double checked facts or accurate statements. If, for example, the reviewer has seen only three movies during his or her entire life, the reviewer would have to make clear that they had seen that many movies. If the reviewer had watched a 'house of horrors' movie as a child, the reviewer should list it as the only film the reviewer has ever seen as an adult. The writer sho uld also be clear about the 'clean slate' for the movie review. Finally, if the reviewer's interest is aroused by a certain character or storyline, then it would be easy to list it. If one wants to quote most of the movie so as to not give more space than needed to the movie's scenes, the writer should include all scenes. The reviewer should strive to make sure that only the essential facts or points are included. The reviewer should not state that the movie is a 'rip-off of' another movie. Not only should one's tastes be considered in a movie review, but the writers also must be interested in what the viewer has to say. In most cases, it is very easy to find an online community that is interested in the movie in question. The reviewer should also make sure that the audience is pleased with the movie as it is. If an audience would not be satisfied with the movie if they knew it was remade, the writer should do the hard work of interviewing people about their displeasure with the remak e. It is a common complaint that a movie does not live up to its original studio's promise of excellence. In fact, many movie reviewers point out how they would feel if they were paying for a picture that they knew was not up to par. This style of movie review can also be written as a regular feature or even as a self-published blog. The Representation of Marriage in The Story of an Hour...

The representation of marriage: The Story of an Hour and Bliss Far from being an ideal state, the representation of marriage in Kate Chopins short story The Story of An Hour and Katherine Mansfields Bliss suggests that it is impossible for women to be fully realized as human beings and as wives. Marriage deprives women of power, of the ability to be fully sexual, and of the ability to achieve a sense of competence in the world. In Chopins short story, the narrator longs for freedom from her oppressive marriage, and is only briefly happy when she things she has been freed by death. Her husbands patriarchal and oppressive controls are masked as concern for his wifes health. Bertha in Mansfields Bliss realizes that she cannot be the sexual creature her husband desires and still function as a wife the marriage she fantasized was so perfect is merely a surface representation of perfection and has no existence in reality. Chopins The Story of an Hour was written during an era when men and women were expected to occupy separate spheres in the marital relationship. Chopins story depicts a young, intelligent woman named Mrs. Mallard who believes her husband has been killed in a train accident. Before the accident, she felt depressed and unfulfilled, given that her activity was extremely restricted by her husband Brentley because of her weak heart. LEADERS ARE BORN NOT MADE There have been an age long debate, and humans since beginning of time, have tried to come up with an answer to this question – Are Leaders born or are they made?. This question has generated an age long debate, which in turn has resulted in various school of thoughts, some believe that leaders are born, while others think otherwise. My contribution to this lifelong debate will serve as a pointer to my position on this issue. I strongly believe that leaders are born and not made. If someone is afraid to make and commit to decisions, all of the communication and empowerment in the world wont make a squat of difference†. (Dao 2008) Another quality that great leaders are born with is Passion. Leaders always exhibit this quality in any area they find themselves. Being passionate about an idea, a project, a business is just learnt in the confines of the four walls of a classroom, it’s a trait that is inborn. â€Å"Passionate leaders sprea d passion to others through their love of life, doing new things, taking risks, being motivated, having a sense of urgency, and reinventingShow MoreRelatedAre Leaders Made or Are Leaders Born?772 Words   |  4 Pagesold question. Improving Conflict and Negotiation

Question: Discuss about the Improving Conflict and Negotiation. Answer: Introduction In the modern world, conflict and negotiation are two familiar and well structured ways of communication between communities, groups and individuals. The two terms are generally used when there are disagreements in the goals and ideas, absence of cooperation, fight for scarce resources and the inability in the personality. Negotiation however, is one of the most prevailing types of interaction in solving conflicts. In case of any disagreements, the people concerned with the conflict aim to accomplish the most suitable result for their position or the industry they represent. Therefore, the convention of finding collective profits and keeping a relationship are the essential elements for a positive outcome (Ahammad et al., 2016). Negotiation is a process by which individuals solve problems and a system through which an agreement or compromise is attained while refraining disputes. Every people are involved in various types of negotiations with the clients, colleagues, superiors, family members on daily basis. The use of efficient negotiation and the skills of solving conflicts raises the efficiency in the task, collective gain and development of relationship. On the other hand, absence of such skills leads in leaving opportunities and the money at the table (Bala et al., 2014). The word conflict refers to any form of disputes or frictions rising within two individuals or a community when the idea or belief of one or more individuals differs from each other leading to a distance among the group. Causes of Conflict There are various causes of conflict and they can be segregated as follows: Structural Factors: The structural factors include specialization, relationship among authorities, jurisdictional uncertainty, differences in goal, similar resources, inconsistency of status and interdependence. Personal Factors: The personal factor comprises of know it all attitude, an ego-maniac person, a self-averse, and an combative person. The other reasons comprise of abilities and skills, perceptions, ethics, emotions, barriers in communication, differences in culture, emotions, values, issues regarding authority, absence of cooperation, arguments regarding different styles, inefficient performance etc (Chestnut et al., 2014). The various levels of conflict are discussed below: Intrapersonal: In this there arises a conflict among the values, thoughts, emotions and principles of an individual internally. For example: A person may have internal conflicts whether to lie to his friend for not attending his call or tell the truth that he did not feel like attending the call at that time. Interpersonal: This process refers to the conflicts that arise between two individuals due to differences in opinion (Christopher 2012). For example, person A is of the opinion that change in the management of the organization will lead to a fall in the structure of the business, whereas person B is of the opinion that change in the management will bring in new ideas into the organization and will benefit the company. Intra group: This is a type of conflict that arises between various members within a group due to differences in ideas and opinions. For example, two members in the financial department of an organization are having a conflict regarding the post of the senior accountant as both of them are eligible for a promotion for this post. The members are having an ego problem and try to compete with each other in order to gain the position (Fisher et al., 2013). Intergroup: This level of conflict rises between two individual groups due to different sets of interests and goals. For example, the marketing department and the financial department of an organization are having a conflict due to the fact that both departments are trying to take credit of the increase in profit for the organization. The fianc department argues that due to their efficiency in handling the finance, the profit has been determined and the marketing team argues that it is due to their interactions with the customers that has lead to rise in profit. The different processes are even helpful in underlying the type of conflict, which will help the negotiators to solve the problem with ease. Negotiation The meaning of negotiation refers to the process of settling disputes in a peaceful manner and hence maintaining parity in the concerned environment. Integrative negotiations are different because it concentrates on common factors rather than any difference and discovers the needs and interests. It is committed to meet all the requirements of the parties. It is helpful in exchanging ideas and information and use the ideas to set standards (Hglund Druckman 2013). Overview of the Process of Negotiation It is helpful in creating a free flow of data. It tries to realize the real needs and objectives of the other negotiators. It concentrates on the common factors between the decrease of differences and the parties. It looks for answers that satisfy the goal and aim of both the parties. Steps in Negotiation Process There are various steps involved in analyzing the process of negotiation and they are listed below: Identification of the Problem: It involves the defining the issue in such a way that is accepted by both the parties. It defines the problem with a focus on the practicality and thoroughness along with revealing the issue to recognise the restraints to reach the goal. Identification of the Problem: This step tries to recognise the interests, which means the underlying concerns, demands, desires or fear that encourages a negotiator. The substantive interests are in relation to the vital issues in the negotiation (Jeong 2016). Process interest reveal the steps in which disputes are resolved. Interest of relationship shows how the parties consider their relationship. Generation of Alternate Solutions: This step tries to create options by trying to redefining the set of problems by the use of non-specific remuneration, cutting costs for compliance, logrolling etc. The other solution involves creating alternatives to the problem through surveys, brainstorming etc (Melin et al., 2013). Analysis and Selection of the Substitutes: The analysis and the selection process is based on the following factors: Narrowing the dimension of the solution alternatives Solution evaluation on the basis of quality, acceptability and goal standards. Willingness to justify the personal preferences (Saarni 2015) The use of subgroups to analyze the complex substitutes. It is seen that negotiation plays a vital role in settling disputes and requires the need of all the above discussed process and steps to efficiently end all disputes. An effective negotiation requires the use of all the mentioned actions as all these steps have a significant part in completing the action of negotiation. Every part of negotiation is interlinked with each other and therefore any defect at any part may lead to an improper negotiation method. Therefore it is seen that conflict and negotiation go hand in hand as negotiations are necessary in order to settle disputes and maintain balance within the organization and in a particular society. Conclusion The above study undertaken therefore is helpful in understanding the meaning of conflict and the steps and the process that are involved in analyzing the conflicts. The paper even evaluates the various reasons of conflict and the parties involved within a conflict. It is seen that conflict initiates due to differences in opinion between different groups or individuals and misbalances the parity. The best way to settle a conflict is by going for negotiation. The paper also analyzes the various types of negotiation and evaluates the overview of the process along with evaluating the steps that are involved in the process of negotiation. It gave a fatal crash for the European feudal system Unquestionably, Cromwell played a very important role in the Englands affairs of that time. As a political and military leader, he had a strong sense of the working of divine providence and incredible strategic thinking. His sincerely held religious views convinced him of the evils of Charles Is regime and the justness of his cause in the Civil War. Political actions of the man were often hesitant at first, then de cisive. A simple country gentleman he rose, in the exceptional circumstances of civil war and revolution, to the highest office in the state. Such success showed him that he had Gods blessing. His Protectorate was marked by an unusual degree of religious toleration. It provided firm and impartial government as well as united the three nations within the British Isles. The union was based on the military conquest, though. Under Cromwell, England acquired a high reputation abroad. Charles I was very tolerant to Roman Catholics, but not for the increasing number of Calvinism followers. His religious beliefs and persecutions of those, who opposed the Anglican Church, caused dissatisfaction of many people. Charles conservative attitudes were also the major contribution towards the revolt of Scots. The king saw his chance and tried to play the army against Parliament, as well as the Scots against the English. Cromwell grasped the evil intentions of Charles. Finally, in disgust, he put an end to the farce by defeating the Scottish army, purging Parliament of ninety-six Presbyterian members, and seizing, trying and executing the faithless Charles. Cromwell was more responsible for the overthrow of the Stuarts than any other man, and as the commander of a large, well-trained army, he had power to establish a dictatorship. The Lord Protectors actions were based upon long doubts and considerations. All the actions he made were inspired by God, after long prayers and sl eepless nights. Cromwell repeatedly claimed that God was controlling events, that his own actions were molded or directed by a very interventionist God, that he sought Gods will on how he should proceed and that divine instruction shaped subsequent events. Although most of his self-determinations were difficult for him, the decision to support Charles Is sending to death was probably the most difficult one for him. Slowly, hesitantly and perhaps unwillingly, Cromwell came round to support both trial and execution, driven forward by the messages which he felt God was sending to him personally and to the army in general during 1648. In late November he was still writing that he and his colleagues were in a waiting posture, desiring to see what the Lord would lead them to. By January 1649 he believed that the Lord required Charles Is trial and execution, a belief fueled by Gods word vouchsafed either direct to him or to the army. Not only Cromwells piety and conscientiousness made him a famous political leader, but also an extremely outstanding ability to be a military man. The new army, basically established by Cromwells talent and energy, was a truly made popular army, inspired by ideals of freedom and justice. It unified various democratic powers. Hence, the largest Cromwells merit was his ability to relate his own interests with this folk movement. He became the revolutionary army commander, l ead it to many victories, neglecting the chiefs, which were often tended to find a compromise with the monarchy. He was prompt and eager when many hung back, recruiting men into his first troops of horse who had, like himself the fear of God and made some conscience of what they did. Cromwell had never been trained in war, but from the very beginning he showed consummate genius as a

Cold War Essays (1104 words) - Soviet UnionUnited States Relations

Cold War After World War II, a struggle between the Communist nations and the democratic nations occurred which is known as the Cold War. The United States had a policy set up that clearly stated that any nation invaded by a communist country would have the assistance of the United States Government in controlling Communism expansion. This theory was known as containment. Containment was used throughout the Cold War, and the policy appeared to be a success by stopping communist Russia. Was the United States wise in implementing their philosophy of containment? Since the Communist nations were held back and did not expand their beliefs, the goal of the United States was reached and containment served its purpose. In my opinion, enforcing containment was an excellent decision. During World War II, the Communist and democratic nations fought as allies against Japan, Germany, and Italy. We were indeed the most powerful nation but we did not wish to receive the burden of world leadership. Thus resulting in the reduction of armed forces for the United States. Then, as we entered the Cold War, the United States and Russia were on separate sides wishing to defeat the other. What caused this change? During World War II we both had a common goal, to counter the Nazi threat. After Hitler was defeated, the United States and Russia remembered their longstanding disagreements. Before the Cold War began, the United States reduced their arms, but Russia only kept expanding. After the U.S. discovered Russia's plan of expanding, they began to increase their military weapons. In order to stop Russia, a plan to counter their expansion must have been made. In the March of 1947, Harry Truman declared in the Truman Doctrine, that the United States would help any free nation resist a Communist attack. The theory used to contain the expansion of Communism throughout the world was known as the Containment Policy. Some believed that his new theory would not force Russia to ?soften their stance.? A few months later in June of 1947, the Marshall Plan was proposed by United States Secretary of State, George Marshall. He proposed giving assistance from the United States to all European countries because the ministers of the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union could not agree on a German peace treaty. In 1948, the Marshall Plan was put into effect. By having a strong and reliable Western Europe, it would assist us in the block and containment of Communism. Later in the year, West Germany established their independence and became part of the Marshall plan. Military strength became very important in the later 1940's. During the Berlin blockade (a block of the railroad, highway, and other forms of transportation by Russian troops to force the United States our of Berlin), the United States started the Berlin airlift. United States and its allies flew planes of food and supplies into Berlin, which eventually stopped the blockade. This proved the United States loyalty to the countries of Western Europe. During the Berlin blockade, a group of non-Communist nations came together to form NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). This was much like containment in the sense that it was being used in the assistance to stop the spread of Communism. The Cold War continued through the 1960's and 70's. Many events gave the Cold War more fuel to be strung out through a longer period of time. Events such as, the Cuban Missile Crisis as a result of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Although there was no official ending date of the Cold War, it came to a slow halt as the United States and the Soviet Union neared nuclear war and complications of the military. The United States claimed their victory and proved containment a success. My belief of what containment has down for the United States is brought together the non-Communist countries to fight against the ?evil?, or Communism. In the end process, several of the Communist and democratic nations began to develop friendlier relations, which helped to ease the tension caused by war. Also, the West Berlin problem (which was major in the Cold War) was solved and it was pronounced West Berlin and not part

In this case, the family assists in understanding lesbianism and heterosexuals in a detailed manner. The family is not only a study association but also a social bond enhanced by the sexual diversity, indifference and respect. For this reason, the actual meaning of the relationship is immeasurable in both the neither qualitative nor quantitative terms. However, the solidarity and cohesion promoted by the family is unpredictable. The family is an opportunity to understand sexual orientation in a holistic perspective by examining the factors that influence sexuality, social perception, and the challenges experienced by the LGBTQ individuals. The most common type of gender identity microaggressions in an institution is the disapproval of the LGBTQ experience where these individuals receive awkward and condemned treatment. Specifically, the disapproval occurs either consciously or unintentional. However, both cases causes harm to the victim (Nadal 91). Additionally, there is a general perception of the LGBTQs as abnormal for their non-conforming sexual orientation. Specifically, heterosexual individuals consider the LGBTQ persons as overly sexual and sexual deviant (Nadal 93). Other forms of microaggressions include the denial of the reality of transphobia, physical threat and harassment, and denial of bodily privacy among others (Nadal 96). Notably, institutions such as schools and the workplace exhibit instances of gender identity microaggressions. Specifically, the most common types of discrimination occur among friends, family members or even the LGBT people (Nadal, 2013). The consequence of microaggressions includes victimization, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and depression among other well-being effects.

Business Policy and Strategic Management - Essay Example It is a discount store outlet, focused on marketing brand names for lower prices. Similar stores such as Woolco and Kmart were not as successful as WalMart, because the latter had some unique operating principles which worked to its benefit. After four decades of operation, Woolco outlets have disappeared, while Kmart has moved into bankruptcy, so that WalMart is the top ranking store in the United States. In international locations, Walmart attracted customers by its Everyday Low Prices. It maintained a relentless cost control system by allowing few perks for its officers and employees. It was also able to negotiate tough deals with its suppliers, using its ability to place bulk orders to also make other demand such as high quality and low prices, which it then passed on to its customers. It maintained several distribution outlets and initiated an electronic data interchange system, allowing suppliers to track sales to deliver new stocks and they were also able to exchange invoices, purchase orders and other documents electronically. Another important aspect contributing to Walmart’s success is its human resource and motivational policies.

Rise of Two Operas Essay Example for Free

Rise of Two Operas Essay The Italians and the French have been two prominent figures in the world of opera music. Their music in the field of tragedy has been flourished by history and emerged from different social context and background. Opera traced its roots from Italy. Opera, in its earliest form can be traced from various types of Italian literature. The themes, moods, and subjects of opera can be associated with Italian poetry, drama, and allegory (Kimbell, 1991. p. 19-21). More importantly, opera particularly the opera seria, has originated at the height of the Renaissance period. The Renaissance art were centered on man. It revolved around man’s greatness, man as passionate, and as virtuous. The themes of opera described the life of the Italians as a whole, which is according to Luigi Barzini: The pleasure of Italy comes from living in a world made by man, for man and on man’s measurement (cited in p. 3). A theme deeply embedded in reality. Revolving around this theme, opera became for the sole purpose of entertainment. However as Renaissance became a period for the flow of rising ideologies, the face of opera changed into a moving art combined with philosophy and moral teaching. This aim served the purpose of educating its audience and not just by mere entertainment (Kimbell, 1991. p. 182). It was Apostolo Zeno and Silvio Stampiglia who created operas that were historical in nature. Stampiglia wrote a series of operas relating early Italian history and Zeno’s works have long been distinguished as a combination of moral and scholarship significance (p. 183). The Italian opera seria had not been completely tragic but became more serious. Metastasio offered ‘suspense’ or in Italian ‘sospensione’ in place of tragedy, in which the audience were presented the internal conflicts of the protagonist. Seeing this kind of progression, the French opera scene has its trend going on as well. However, as mentioned from the beginning, opera had its roots originating from Italy. There were no French composers at that time. It was an Italian national who moved to France, named Jean-Baptiste Lully who was said to have popularized opera to the French people (Edwards, 1862. . 14). Origins of French opera may have come from other form of arts such as ballet. Ballet has incorporated music with dramatic dance routines thus making as a basis into recreating a dance that has dramatic dialogues in the form of music (Grouts Williams, 2003. p. 22). Lully gained full monopoly when spreading his music due to his friendship with King Louis XIV. He collaborated with the likes of Quinault to create operas which they called tragedie en musique (Anderson, 2003. p. 3). It is important to note that though it was the time of Rennaisance in Italy, it had been a slow progress for France to grasp the music from other countries. Since Lully gained monopoly for production of operas, the monarchy controlled the flow of music from outside in accordance to Lully’s advice (p. 1). Basing it from here, the themes of the operas that were being played within King Louis XIV’s court still centered on mythical themes rather than on humanism. The plot of tragedy focused on mythical characters and fictional conflicts (Easterling, 1997. p. 136).

Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death listed in the United States. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness. â€Å"In 1996 diabetes contributed to more than 162,000 deaths†(Lewis 1367).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Diabetes mellitus is not a single disease but a group of disorders with glucose intolerance in common† (McCance 674). Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar) and results from defective insulin production, secretion, and utilization. There are many forms of diabetes. â€Å"Diabetes increases the risk of heart and blood vessel disease, amputation, infections, kidney damage, eye problems (including blindness), and nerve malfunction† (Husain). I will briefly define the different forms of diabetes and then I will discuss diabetes mellitus in general. 1.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or type 1 is when the pancreas will produce little or no insulin, therefore requiring injections of insulin to control diabetes and prevent ketoacidosis. All patients with this type of diabetes need insulin to survive (Deakins 34). Five to ten percent of all diabetic patients have IDDM. Usual presentation is rapid with classical symptoms of polydipsia (increased thirst), polyphagia (increased hunger), polyuria (increased urination), and weight loss. IDDM is most commonly seen in patients under thirty, but can be seen in older adults. 2.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or type 2 is caused by a defect in insulin manufacture and release from the beta cell or insulin resistance in the peripheral tissues. Approximately ninety percent of diabetic patients have NIDDM. Genetics play a big role in the etiology of NIDDM and is often associated with obesity. Usually presentation is slow and often insidious with symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, poor wound healing, and recurrent infection. Primarily occurs in adults over thirty. 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as carbohydrate intolerance, which occurs during pregnancy. Occurs in approximately three percent of pregnancies, and usually disappears after pregnancy. Women with GDM are at higher risk for having diabetes in the future. GDM is associated with increased risk of morbidity. Women should be screened for GDM between the 24th and the 28th weeks of gestation. 4.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious... ...ur to six hours to reach the bloodstream, but stays in the bloodstream for about thirty-six hours. It peaks about fourteen to twenty-four hours after injection. Diabetes affects the entire body. It slowly deteriorates every one of the body’s organs.
